Sizing & coating

To improve the surface properties of the paper and its printability, most of the papers and boards to be printed are sized or coated. Sizing is mainly done to hydrophobize the surface and increase paper surface strength while coating increases surface smoothness, brightness, opacity, gloss and ink holdout. Beside of the grades to be printed, others can be coated with functional coating like greaseproof or carbonless papers.
Whatever, your need in sizing, on-line or off-line coating ABK has a solution for you in its Allicoat series and whole coat line ancillary equipment.

ALLICOAT SP

For size deposit at low machine speed (<900 m/min), our Allicoat SP will fit to your need. This pond size press can be pneumatic or hydraulic and is designed to be upgraded as an Allicoat FP-M with the addition of the coat heads.
Sizing with a pond size-press will maximize the starch penetration deeply into the sheet. This is important for grades such as corrugated medium to optimize internal sheet strength and stiffness. The starch deposit can reach over 3gsm/side and will depend on the size characteristic and paper absorption capacity.

ALLICOAT GR / UMRC

Historically, to overcome the splashing problem of the size-press, ABK developed the Allicoat gate roll which can be the right solution for several applications (sizing or pigment coating). It eliminates the possibility of saturation of the sheet due to excess of starch and increases the shear on the starch before application. The Allicoat UMRC is a spin-off the GR version but equipped with metering heads instead of the outside rolls.

ALLICOAT FP-M

Our Modular film press Allicoat FP-M was the next development after the gate roll series. It is well suited for sizing at high speed where high pond activity prevents the use of a pond size press. It also allowed pre-coating or coating layers up to 12gsm/side.

The coating head can be equipped of a blade, grooved rod or smooth rod depending on the application. In all case cross machine profile and control of the weight deposit will be optimal.

The primary benefits of the film-press are :

The consistent application of an even/regular coat weight, the reduction of the sheet breaks and a lower amount of water to be evaporated in the dryer section as color consistency can be higher, the possibility of different coat characteristics on each paper side. Moreover, it favors surface strength as opposed to pond sizing.

ALLICOAT RBP / RBM

Our flooded nip Allicoat version is flexible and can be equipped with different metering systems, either blade or rod. It is possible to quickly change from one system to another during a machine stop.

Rod metering is often preferred for pre-coating for runnability aspects and blade is advocated for final-coating in order to optimize the product final quality. The coat head blade mode can go to super bent blade, this being important for top of the line glossy papers.

It is the correct solution for heavy coating from 6 to 20 gsm/side at low and medium speed up to around 900 m/min.
These coaters have been designed for a perfect reproducibility of adjustments using captors and numerical displays. Some adjustments are specific and allow flexibility and adaptability of our equipments to operating speed, coating colors and smoothing or doctoring operations.

ALLICOAT JF

For heavy weight coating at high speeds and above the operating range of the Allicoat RBM, the Allicoat jet flow coater will be your solution to avoid ribbing pattern, streakiness and splashing problems which can be encountered at high speed with the previous technologies.

The applicator roll of a flooded nip coater is replaced by a jet applicator which applies a uniform film controlled by a loaded blade.

The main adjustable parameters on the Allicoat JF are:

  • Angle, distance and impingement position adjustment of the jet applicator,
  • Flow rate and slice width

ALLICOAT SD

The ABK Allicoat SD is part of the short-dwell coater family. It is well suited for medium coating and can work at higher speed than a flooded nip coater. The metering can be achieved by rod or blade, but today is usually by blade.

The coating head can apply a full range of coat weights from 3 to 15 gsm/side on grades ranging from fine paper to bleached and unbleached board.

The Allicoat SD loading system can significantly improve both the quality and productivity of your coating operations and offer the following advantages:

  • High smoothness of the coated surface,
  • Repeatable coating accuracy-blade load is not subject to friction or inertia load,
  • Elimination of non productive blade “wear-in” time,
  • Optimum control of coat weights and uniform cross-machine profile,
  • Preset angle of blade maintained under any load,
  • Blade angle and blade loading can be changed on-the-run from automatic control panel.

ALLICOAT AK

Our Allicoat AK air knife coater is the right solution for thick pre-coating of paper and board grades or for the deposit of shear sensitive colour such as carbonless capsules at machine speeds up to 500 m/min and over. Unlike the Allicoat FP-M, it is part of the contour coater family but it permits the deposit of thicker layers, one side at a time.

Our concept is based on simple and reproducible adjustments of angle, distance and impingement position of the air jet as well as a curetting dual air knife to avoid cleaning downtime. A pre-metering device with rotating rod is usually installed.

ALLICOAT CH

This champion coater is generally used on slow machines up to 250 m/min such as board machines either for a first coat or final coat. It allows a deposit in the range of 4 to 14 gsm depending on the utilization of smooth or spiral rotating rods at a very attractive price.
