Calenders

Thanks to 25 years of experience and at a time belonging to the Küsters group, ABK designs and manufactures all type of calenders to meet customers increasing demands with view to helping them develop new products.
In particular, the ABK Soft Nip calender type S.O.L. (Sink On Line) embodies the latest on-line calendering technologies for optimum paper and board finishing.
Nip load, cover hardness and roll temperature, which are the main parameters controlling paper smoothness, bulk, gloss and uniformity, will be chosen according to our experience and your grade within following ranges:
- Nip Pressure: usual working range is 20-350kN/m but can go to 450kN/m and over for specific applications,
- Roll surface temperature: There are 3 main temperature levels: 120°C (heating by hot water), 200 °C (heating by oil), 300°C (electrical heating). These temperature levels can be further increased by the addition of a thermo profiler with part of its energy being diverted to heat the Thermo rolls.
- Cover hardness: generally between 88°ShD and 93°ShD but can be chosen down to 50°ShD for some specific applications.

The Nip intensity is determined by a combination of deflection controlled rolls, heated metal rolls and load relieve devices. The deflection controlled roll provides uniform center to edge control of the nip pressure as well as compensating for overall load level provided by the loading device. The Thermo roll of duo-pass or tri-pass system type is designed for optimal heat transfer. |
ABK manufactures also different framework geometries and will propose the one which fit the best to your needs. The modular frame allows inverting the roll position, the compact one gives the advantage of small space requirements; the 3 rolls calender is well suited for application where only 1 side of the paper/board is to be calendered.
All ABK Calenders are hydraulically handled with our own opening/closing and loading system which allows eliminating all kind of mechanical connection between FS and DS arms.
Trials can be done on our pilot calender (700 mm, 900 m/min) on request and the results found are usually guaranteed and integrated into the contracts.
