Paper production is a complex task requiring large amounts of water, heat, and energy.

With companies increasingly emphasizing environmental friendly production and keeping an eye on costs, paper and pulp producers are looking for new ways to slash waste. Consequently many are turning to Madeleine Drying Solutions (M.D.S.), a subsidiary of ABK Group.

Based in Estaires, near Lille in France, M.D.S. offers a wide range of air trough dryer blowers, ventilators, hoods, exchangers, and economizers that reduce energy consumption.

Products offered by MDS

M.D.S. sells high-tech drying technology and equipments to industrial paper manufacturers. These equipments are chock full of advantages. For instance, its blowing roll pocket ventilation machines can result in a 10% to 20% increase in production. Other benefits include longer periods between tools changes, better CD moisture profiles thanks to improved felt tension, energy savings, and low or free maintenance. MDS insulating hoods for drying sections can also boost production while cutting energy consumption thanks to their excellent heat recovery and high dew point. The same engineering know-how goes into its steam exchangers, which incorporate fine steam coils for every pressure flow and power level.

History of the company
The roots of the company go back to 1927, when Albert MADELEINE founded the company. Back in those early days, the French machine builder was specialized in the manufacture of air conditioners and ventilation units. These machines provided the foundation for the company's expansion into paper production, occurring in the 1960s when it applied its technology and know-how to blow roll. MADELEINE S.A. was awarded a patent for this breakthrough.

Since then, MADELEINE S.A. has pursued a strategy based on customer satisfaction and product innovation so to better expand on the energy-saving concept and to reply to market trends.
ln 2002, M.D.S. joined one of the leading suppliers of paper machines, ABK Group (former Ateliers ALLIBE) which is today a consortium of 6 complementary companies which interact one with each other for achieving ABK Group mission and goals.

Partner of ABK Group
The merger has proved to be advantageous for both parties. The M.D.S. range of products complements the offering programme of ABK Group. "These products allow us to offer complete systems," says Paul Allibe, chairman and CEO of ABK. On the other hand, MDS relies on its parent as well as on its sister companies in terms of sales and marketing resources, particularly for addressing foreign markets like Germany, Belgium, Spain, and even China.
And truly, by working hand in hand, and by offering specific equipments as well as a dedicated level of services and support, these 6 companies allow ABK Group to offer to its customers the very best technology and services available to comply with their global projects' requirements, and this whatever the scope of the project, the requested equipment specifications and the production expectations.

Be it for turnkey projects, new installations, upgrading or revamping of paper and board machines, the strength and the competitive advantage of ABK Group stands in its subsidiaries: ABK Machinery for the engineering, the customization, the manufacturing and the revamping of machines and equipments; ABK Services for the start-up of erected and commissioned equipments, their maintenance, the training of personnel and any preliminary survey; ABK Automation for the design and the implementation of powerful automation and process control systems; IR.D.S. (Infrared Drying Solutions) for sheet conditioning and infrared drying systems; HYDRO MOTION for the design and the manufacturing of hydraulic and pneumatic equipments; and of course M.D.S. for the design and installation of ventilation and drying systems. "We see a potential customer base of around 250 or 300 customers worldwide." M. Allibe is also confident that sales can be boosted to three or four million EUR without significant personnel expansion.

A case study in Germany
One of the most important European paper manufacturers has recently trusted M.D.S. technology and invested in a system of heat recovery for its site in Germany which produces pre-impregnated papers. These are products with a high quality level but subject to short runs, strictly controlled (10% rejected), not re-usable in the pulp once reeled, and for all those reasons high energy consumers.

M.D.S. challenge has consisted in designing & engineering a smart, cheap, efficient and flexible system customer oriented. And last but not least, the system was to be delivered, tested & performed within 4 months from order, in order to take advantage of the annual shutdown.

Benefits from an unsuspected pool of energy savings
With various data and constraints in hand, the engineers of M.D.S. have designed a very complete and impressive system which has been able to address the various parts of the production line where energy could be saved, heat recovered and steam reused for reducing the costs of production as much as possible.
After several weeks of engineering, men work, equipment erection, commissioning and start up, both the project expectations and ABK/MDS guarantees have been reached with success and energy savings have reached more than 20% compared to previous consumption.
